Commander, Ninth Coast Guard District, Visits The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard for Tour of USCG Cutter KATMAI BAY

Rear Admi­ral June E. Ryan, Com­man­der 9th Coast Guard Dis­trict, vis­it­ed The Great Lakes Tow­ing Com­pa­ny on August 11, 2015, and met with Com­pa­ny offi­cials and employ­ees to learn more about the Company’s tow­ing oper­a­tions on the U.S. Great Lakes and to vis­it the USCG Cut­ter KATMAI BAY while in the Great Lakes Shipyard’s dry­dock for inspec­tion, main­te­nance, and repairs. Rear Admi­ral Ryan was accom­pa­nied by Lieu­tenant (jg) Lloyd Hes­lin, Aide to the Admi­ral; Mas­ter Chief Pet­ty Offi­cer Sean Sul­s­ki, Com­mand Mas­ter Chief 9th Coast Guard Dis­trict; and Lieu­tenant John Mundale, Com­mand­ing Offi­cer of USCGC KATMAI BAY (WTGC-101).

Rear Admi­ral Ryan assumed her duties as the Com­man­der, 9th Guard Dis­trict on June 3, 2015.

Ron Ras­mus, The Great Lakes Tow­ing Company’s Chair­man accom­pa­nied Rear Admi­ral Ryan for the tour of the Ship­yard. KATMAI BAY is home­port­ed in Sault Sainte Marie, Michi­gan and arrived at the Ship­yard on July 8, 2015.

The Ninth Coast Guard Dis­trict is respon­si­ble for all Coast Guard oper­a­tions through­out the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Sea­way and parts of the sur­round­ing states includ­ing 6,700 miles of shore­line and 1,500 miles of the inter­na­tion­al bor­der with Cana­da. The 6,000 active duty, reserve, civil­ian and aux­il­iary men and women who make up the Ninth Dis­trict deliv­er mul­ti-mis­sion ser­vices in search and res­cue, mar­itime safe­ty and secu­ri­ty, envi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion, mar­itime law enforce­ment, aids to nav­i­ga­tion and icebreaking.
