POSITION TITLE: Director of Fleet Engineering
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: VP of Compliance
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
OVERVIEW
The Director of Fleet Engineering oversees all aspects of the fleet’s engineering, including staff, maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, and meeting all organizational goals relating to safe and efficient transportation. The fleet includes forty tugs assigned to ports throughout the Great Lakes. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to lead our fleet engineering team and contribute to the success of our organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, oversee, and enforce day-to-day maintenance, preventive maintenance, and repair programs and activities for tugboats, engines, propulsion systems, and equipment;
- Provide emergency response to mechanical failures or breakdowns by providing on-call troubleshooting and other engineering solutions;
- Assign and coordinate shoreside Engineering personnel and crew, and coordinate repairs;
- Assist with incident response and investigations and preparation of incident reports and root cause analysis;
- Communication and collaboration with the US Coast Guard, vendors, shipyards, and contractors;
- Ensure compliance with ABS, the US Coast Guard, and International/Federal/State laws and regulations, Company and environmental policies, and safety standards;
- Prepare and/or maintain all Company engineering and fleet maintenance records such as engineering logs, service records, compliance documentation, and documentation relating to both internal and external safety management audits;
- Prepare and provide regular reports to executive leadership regarding various fleet/engineering topics;
- Evaluate, maintain, administer, and oversee various programs, policies, and procedures such as the Company’s Towing Safety Management programs, to ensure compliance, assess suitability, and standards of quality;
- Manage and oversee personnel, including conducting performance reviews and providing technical guidance on engineering problems;
- Train and oversee training initiatives for various engineers, mechanics, technicians, and crew;
- Negotiate and manage contracts with engine manufacturers, repair yards, parts suppliers, service providers, and other vendors, and periodically evaluate their performance;
- Develop and/or contribute to strategies and strategic decisions regarding matters such as fleet modernization, fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, vessel acquisitions, disposals, and re-powering;
- Prepare and manage the engineering department’s annual operating and capital budgets, and review expenditures to optimize costs;
- Spearhead and lead various Engineering projects;
- Maintain all aspects of the Company’s Towing Safety Management System;
- Promote a safety-first culture in all Engineering operations, at all times;
- Continuously identify and implement operational improvements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- US Coast Guard licensed engineer preferred;
- Extensive experience in marine engineering with five (5) or more years of experience in a fleet management or supervisory role;
- Strong understanding of marine machinery, systems, and regulatory requirements;
- Ability to lead and manage a team effectively;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions;
- Strong knowledge of marine operations and the maritime industry;
- Strong knowledge of maritime regulations at federal and state levels;
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and timelines, and draw valid conclusions;
- Ability to multitask, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
